For most calendar-year U.S. taxpayers, the 2027 filing season covers tax year 2026. The regular federal return and payment due date is April 15, 2027. Qualifying Americans living abroad generally get an automatic filing extension to June 15, but unpaid tax can still accrue interest from April 15.
2027 filing calendar for 2026 returns
| Date | What it means | Important detail |
|---|---|---|
| April 15, 2027 | Regular federal individual return and payment due date | Interest on unpaid tax generally starts from this date, even if you qualify for the expat filing extension. |
| June 15, 2027 | Automatic two-month filing extension for qualifying taxpayers abroad | Generally applies if, on the regular due date, your tax home and main place of business or post of duty are outside the United States and Puerto Rico, subject to IRS rules. Attach the required statement to your return. |
| June 15, 2027 | Typical deadline to request more filing time with Form 4868 when using the expat extension | Form 4868 generally extends filing to October 15; it does not extend the time to pay. |
| October 15, 2027 | Extended federal individual return deadline | File Form 4868 by the applicable June deadline to request this additional time. Special cases may have different rules. |
| April 15, 2027 | FBAR due date for calendar year 2026 | FinCEN provides an automatic extension to October 15, 2027. No separate extension request is required. |
| October 15, 2027 | FBAR automatic extended due date | If the date falls on a weekend or legal holiday in a future year, the deadline may move; October 15, 2027 is a Friday. |
How the automatic expat extension works
The automatic two-month extension is for qualifying U.S. citizens and resident aliens who live and work abroad on the regular due date. It extends the time to file, not the time to pay tax. If you owe federal tax, pay what you reasonably can by April 15 to limit interest and potential charges.
To use the automatic extension, the IRS says to attach a statement to the return explaining that you qualify. If you need more time to file after June 15, file Form 4868 by the applicable deadline. Do not assume that a calendar reminder, an email to the IRS or a foreign residence alone creates every extension you need.
FBAR is a separate filing
The Report of Foreign Bank and Financial Accounts (FinCEN Form 114) is not filed with Form 1040. It is generally required when the aggregate maximum value of qualifying foreign financial accounts exceeded $10,000 at any time during the calendar year. Swedish bank, savings and investment accounts can be relevant depending on account ownership and classification.
For calendar year 2026, the FBAR is due April 15, 2027 and receives an automatic extension to October 15, 2027. The FBAR extension is separate from the income-tax return extension.
Tax-year 2026 figures are not tax-year 2027 figures
The 2027 filing season is for income earned in 2026. For tax year 2026, the IRS has announced a maximum Foreign Earned Income Exclusion of $132,900 per qualifying person and standard deductions of $32,200 for married filing jointly, $16,100 for single or married filing separately, and $24,150 for head of household, subject to eligibility and the final return instructions.
These amounts should not be applied automatically to income earned during 2027. Tax-year 2027 limits belong to the return generally filed in 2028 and should be checked against official IRS guidance when published.
State, estimated-tax and other deadlines
State income-tax obligations vary. A state may still assert filing obligations based on domicile, prior residence, property, business activity or other connections, and state extensions may not match the federal rules. Estimated tax, retirement-account, gift-tax, entity and information-return deadlines can also differ from the individual Form 1040 calendar.
Do not use this calendar as a substitute for checking the rules that apply to your particular state, entity or filing obligation.
A practical checklist
- Gather 2026 income, Swedish tax and pension records.
- List every foreign financial account and record its maximum value for 2026.
- Decide whether you qualify for the automatic expat extension.
- Estimate tax due and pay by April 15, 2027 where possible.
- File Form 4868 by the applicable deadline if you need more time beyond June 15.
- Submit FBAR separately if required.
- Check state filing obligations separately from federal rules.
